The pre-shot routine is a regular theme in mental coaching. For the most part, however, it is discussed only in the context of getting ready for strike shots, and much less time is dedicated to developing a pre-shot routine for spares.
The pre-shot routine includes elements that might need to be adjusted between your strike shots and spare attempts. Your pre-spare routine should include letting go of any negative emotions associated with the first ball, as well as:
- the choice to park your analysis of the last shot;
- visualization of the spare target line;
- self-talk that is specific to spare shooting, such as “hard and straight” or “covered like a blanket.”
