The Basics of a Competition Debrief

Experience is considered to be a great teacher, but learning from your experiences requires some reflection. Bowlers can and should debrief themselves following any competitive event, including leagues or tournament play.

From league play to a PBA major, any level of competition can offer insights for a bowler, regardless of the quality of the performance. If you want to learn from both the positives and the negatives of a competition, you can debrief yourself, preferably in a journal, by asking the following questions:

• Did I achieve my goals, surpass them, or fall short? Where is the gap?
• Where did my performance fall short? How can I improve next time?
• What went well that I wish to repeat? What are the bright spots that I can pull out of a sub-par performance?
