Motiv’s new high performance ball is one of the best rolling balls we have thrown from Motiv. The new Impulse V2 core has a shape similar to the original Impulse core used in the Primal Impulse. The core has been manipulated to lower the RG while keeping the five inch flare potential. The Primal Scream covers this weight block with a new coverstock called Whiplash Solid Reactive. This cover provides the most continuous motion we have seen out of a Motiv bowling ball.
The reaction this ball gave us was a pretty remarkable look on the medium test pattern. All three testers were able to play in their comfort zones on this pattern. What was impressive was that during the transition, as the fronts began to go away and the back end to tighten up, we needed to move left to catch more head oil and the Primal Scream showed no signs of slowing down. The ball just wouldn’t quit; it just kept coming and coming.
The cover was not quite strong enough for the heavy test pattern at the box finish. We lowered the box finish to 2000 wet sand on all three test balls to provide the extra hook needed for the heavier volume pattern. The same continuous motion we had on the medium we also had on the wet after the surface adjustment. We kept moving left and never had to worry about the Primal Scream not making it back to the pocket.
The dry test pattern needed the help of some Power Gel Polish. The polish kept the Primal Scream from wanting to read the lane too early like it did at the box finish.
Our sport pattern was at the mercy of the Primal Scream at the box finish. The ball created traction in the oil and was smooth enough off the hook without losing all its energy at the pins. As well as this ball takes to surface changes, even flatter patterns that are wetter or drier would not be a problem with the right finish.
Strengths
Motiv adds a new reaction shape to their line with the Primal Scream. We have not seen a Motiv solid provide this much continuation from breakpoint to pin deck.
Weaknesses
There are few things to keep the Primal Scream from being thrown. Super heavy oil or trying to throw it on dead dry lanes are the only conditions which might set the Primal Scream up to fail.
Overall Summary
The Primal Scream is the must have ball for Motiv fans or bowlers looking for a strong, continuous solid ball for use on medium to heavy oil patterns. The continuation this ball has through the entire lane is the big selling point.
